Velie-Wheelock Neighborhood

This area includes Wheelock, Emma D. Velie, and Glen Oaks residential additions. Weelocks were early Moline mayors and Emma Velie was one of John Deere’s daughters. Mainly Swedish immigrants and their offspring built a variety of middle-class homes in the Wheelock and Velie neighborhoods between 1900 and 1930. Dwellings include many bungalows, four-square and more elaborate Prairie style structures, and some Colonial styles. The adjacent upper-middle class Glen Oaks addition, popularly known as Morgan Park, was developed mainly in the 1920s and includes these and some larger Tudor styles. The Wheelock-Velie neighborhood association was established in 2003.
