Grant School
2430 6th Avenue

Nestled at the base of the bluff, at 6th Avenue and 24th Street, the main building of Grant School was constructed in 1886-87 at a cost of about $25,000. By 1880 the east side of town had begin to grow rapidly and, before Grant’s opening, classes had been held in two small nearby venues, East Ward School and Lovejoy’s Hall. In 1894 an annex to Grant was constructed, which is visible in the background in this postcard image. The main building was razed in 1975.

This 1899 north-facing photo (left), taken by Beder Wood, shows Grant School with the Mississippi River and Iowa in the background. The photo is part of the Rock Island County Historical Society Collection and is available on the online Upper Mississippi River Digital Image Archive.
