Charles Atkinson was one of the founders of Moline, and according to local history, was responsible for providing the name "Moulin", a french word meaning "City of Mills." Translated into English, the name Moline was adopted.

Arriving from the east in search of opportunity like most Moliners, Atkinson was involved in local mills, was one-time partner of plowmakers John Deere, John Gould and Robert Tate. He was also a banker and at one time held an interest in most Moline businesses.
