Highland

This area includes the Highland, Villa Park, and other nearby subdivisions.

It is best recognized by its business district along 23rd Avenue (now Avenue of the Cities) that first emerged in the World War I era. Soon thereafter, Highland became Moline’s first automobile-based commercial area, the trolley never having reached the area. It grew in the 1920s when automobile ownership was soaring, then again after World War II when almost every middle-class family had a car. Thereafter it extended eastward, evolving into Moline’s “Miracle Mile,” a classic 1950s “suburban” commercial strip.
