Coaltown Road

Like Blackhawk Road, Coaltown Road follows the base of the Rock River bluff. It dates to the mid-19th century when it connected Moline with farms and coalmines along that bluff to the east. Its name derives from an early settlement called Coaltown, which was located just east to today’s Moline city limits.

It was along this road that Deere & Company chose to build its 1963 Aero Saarinen-designed administration building, which pioneered the use of weathering steel. Although much of the original Coaltown Road remains today, it has taken a back seat to 1990s commercial development along the parallel, and aptly named, John Deere Road.
