Campbell's Island
This is the site of the western-most battle of the War of 1812. In July of 1814 a party of the Sac Indians, led by Black Hawk, was convinced by the British to attack three boats of American soldiers led by Lieutenant John Campbell. Sixteen Americans were killed and one boat lost. The remaining two boats fled to St. Louis and the British briefly took control of this area.
In 1903 a streetcar company purchased the entire island for a resort. They completed a bridge in 1904 that would connect it with a newly-founded East Moline plus the Tri-Cities of Moline, Rock Island, and Davenport. Today Campbell’s Island is a largely residential area that floods on a frequent basis.
